Ami and Aden in the locked living-room set

A girl with too many outfits, a grumpy talking cat and a Melbourne flat. Ami & Aden is an animated short series starring me and my real cat.

I write, direct and produce every part of it myself with Higgsfield: characters, set, storyboard, video, voice and lip-sync.

The hardest part of AI video is keeping characters looking the same from shot to shot. This project is my answer to that: a repeatable pipeline where every shot is built from locked references.

From real life

Aden is my real cat: a fluffy white Scottish Fold with folded ears, amber eyes and a permanent grumpy face. I built both characters from my own photos, so they carry our real look, outfits and attitude.

Find the style

I tested three looks before committing: hand-drawn 2D, flat cartoon and soft 3D. 3D won. It reads well on a phone screen and shows off fabric and fur, which matters when half the story is outfits.

Lock the characters

The secret to consistency: never generate a character from text alone.

Each character gets a locked reference: a turnaround plus an expression sheet. Every new shot is generated with these sheets passed in as references, so Ami and Aden stay on model across scenes, outfits and camera angles.

Ami character sheet: four-angle turnaround and eight facial expressions
Ami: 4-angle turnaround + 8 expressions
Aden character sheet: turnaround, sitting pose and eight expressions
Aden: turnaround, poses + 8 expressions

Build the set

Ami's home is cosy Scandi-Japandi with a fashion twist: a cream boucle sofa, light oak, a clothes rail with the bucket hat, and a cat bed for Aden in the afternoon sun. I designed one room, then generated a set sheet from four angles to reuse in every shot.

Write the story

Episode 1 · about 45 seconds · 8 shots · 3 outfits

"Does this outfit pass?" Ami is heading out to explore Melbourne and asks Aden to help pick an outfit. Aden is the harshest critic in town, and he knows Melbourne gets four seasons in one day.

  1. 01AmiAden! I'm exploring Melbourne today. Help me pick an outfit!
  2. 02AdenA Melbourne trip? We literally live in Melbourne.
  3. 03AmiThis one! Chic and chill, perfect for a laneway café.
  4. 04AdenRain at two. Blazing sun at three. Wind steals your hat at four. It's Melbourne, babe. Not Bali.
  5. 05AmiFine, all black! Very Melbourne. Hot, right?
  6. 06AdenWhose funeral is it? Oh. Your nine-dollar oat latte's.
  7. 07AmiUgh! Fine, YOU pick then!
  8. 08AdenWear this. It survives all four seasons, and it's covered in my fur. So all of Melbourne knows you're taken.

Each shot goes from its start frame into an image-to-video model. I pick the model per shot: Kling 3.0 for longer moving scenes, Seedance 2.5 for close-ups, reactions and lip-sync.

Voice and lip-sync

I auditioned four AI voices for Aden and chose a low, dry voice that fits his deadpan. The first cut was in Thai. I switched the series to English for an Australian audience, kept the Thai takes as backups, then lip-synced each line by feeding the audio into Seedance as a reference.

How I run production

Locked references→︎Start frame→︎Image to video→︎Voice→︎Lip-sync→︎Edit
  • AEvery job is logged. Each character, set and shot has its generation ID and references written down, so any shot can be regenerated, extended or re-voiced later.
  • BModels chosen on cost. A 10-second Kling 3.0 shot costs 17.5 credits; an 8-second Seedance 2.5 shot costs 56. I save Seedance for close-ups and lip-sync.
  • CBuilt to scale. The next episode is scripted and its assets are generated, ready for video.
